Some of you may be thinking, "I am not good enough to join a band." Even though some people approach it as such, music is not a competitive sport. Many people leave music for that very reason. It ceases to be fun and they quit. Playing in a community band is about having fun, enjoying the beauty of making music, and sharing the experience with others.

The community band is a proud tradition of American life. A hundred years ago, community bands were the entertainment in small towns. But community bands are as much about community as they are about music. Too often, activities are separated into groups based on age and ability. A community band is one of the few activities in which three or four generations of people of diverse backgrounds can participate equally - one might say, harmoniously.
